The Last of Us

I tend to stay away from the horror genre because we do not mix well. I don’t like feeling like I’m on the edge of my seat for the whole movie or game because it really triggers my anxiety. Truthfully, I’m not a fan. With The Last of Us, my anxiety was triggered. A lot.

I had previously tried to play this game in 2018 but I didn’t get very far. I tried it again in 2019 and was able to finish it.

Background

Just to give you a little background on this game, this game was developed by Naughty Dog and it is a PlayStation exclusive. It originally came out on the PS3 in 2013 and in 2014, there was a remastered version that was released for the PS4. It has won several awards and it is by far, the most sold video game of all time.

Story

The story begins with a man named Joel who just lost his daughter to a gunshot from a soldier after they had “just been through hell.” He held her in his arms while she died. They were trying to escape the infected that had just turned thanks to a mutated fungus called Cordyceps. A more in depth explanation will be below. The next scene we see is Joel 20 years after the death of his daughter. He is woken up by the sound of knocking on a door. On the other end of it is Tess, his partner in a new world overrun by the Infected.

Throughout the whole game, you try to survive and protect Ellie so that you’re able to get her to the Fireflies.

The infected

Usually, a human turns into the Infected within one to two days after being bitten. They turn into runners. You can distinguish a runner by the moans they make and their human like physical characteristics. Their eye sight is the first to go when they get the infection. The second stage is a stalker. At this point, they have lost an eye and their ferocity is near to that of a clicker. They will usually spot their target and stalk their pray. They will attack head on. As time progresses, they turn into clickers. At this point, they’re so far gone that they no longer have their human face. The final stage is a bloater. This stage is the worst of the worst. They’re also hard to kill. You’ll know you’re near a bloater because they’re the biggest.

My thoughts

I didn’t think we’d get to see action and a death in the beginning of the game but that helped set the tone for the rest of the game. The graphics for this game are really well done and this is one of the games that actually aged well. It’s six years old but I honestly can’t tell. I played the remastered version that my girlfriend let me borrow. One of my favorite aspects of the video game was the relationship between Ellie and Joel. In the beginning, the relationship was strained and he hardly talked to her. He made it a point to only tell her what needed to be said. As the game progresses, we see that their relationship is getting better and we learn new things about the characters. I won’t go into much here only because of spoilers.

Also, at the time of writing this post, I have not played the DLC, The Last of Us: Left Behind.

Truthfully, I also never expected a game to trigger my anxiety so much. It was the not knowing what was going to happen next that really got to me. Even though these were characters in a video game, I never really wanted to be anywhere alone. I felt like I always needed to be with Ellie or vice versa. So if you would like to play this game but have anxiety, I’d tread lightly. Also, there is a scene where one of the characters commits suicide. If that triggers you, I wouldn’t recommend playing this game or maybe tread lightly. Since it has been six years since this game originally came out, I’m sure YouTube has many gameplay videos to show what that scene is.

I also have a Twitter thread that documents my experience during the game.

After

The Last of Us Part II is rumored to come out sometime in 2020 but was announced late 2016. The gameplay for that looks so freaking good. Also, Ellie as an adult is 😍. Definitely major crush. It also seems like we’ll be able to play her directly but it’s unknown if it’s just for a portion of the game like The Last of Us or if it’s the full game. The gameplay is just so amazing too. I can’t wait to play this game. I’m super excited for it.
